Solutions That Put Your Children First
You and your spouse adore your children. In your divorce, you want to prioritize their best interests above all else. As a family law attorney with more than 15 years of experience, I can work with you to develop unique solutions that suit you and your kids.
I am James T. Williamson. At my law firm, Williamson Family Law, PLLC, I work with clients throughout southwestern Minnesota who need customized strategies to achieve their child custody and visitation goals. By putting your children first, I can help you shield them from the impact of a divorce and set them up for a healthy future.
Shielding Your Kids From The Storm
I strongly believe that parents and their attorneys should work together to reach an agreement on a custody and visitation schedule. This not only preserves your children’s emotional health but also grants you more control over the outcome. However, when necessary, I am prepared to advocate for your family legal needs at a custody trial.
How Do Minnesota Courts Determine Custody?
Minnesota’s family law courts do not have one simple formula for determining custody and visitation. Whether you and your spouse are divorcing or you were not married to begin with, judges tend to favor joint custody whenever possible. When awarding custody, the judge will consider several factors:
- The ability of each parent to care for the child
- The child’s relationship with each parent
- The location of each parent
- The child’s involvement with school, church and other community activities
- The presence or history of substance abuse, mental illness or domestic violence
There is no way to predict your custody decision with any certainty. If you schedule an appointment to sit down with me, I can provide a more accurate assessment of what to expect.
